This has been an exciting week for University of Wisconsin wrestler Braxton Amos. The 2020 graduate of Parkersburg South returned to his hometown, where he had jam packed schedule. Less than a month ago, Braxton competed in Russia, where he won a gold medal (Freestyle) and a bronze medal (Greco Roman) at the Junior Worlds. He is only the third American to double medal and the first American to double medal and have one be gold. These accolades came after he competed in the Olympic Trials, where he finished as the runner up and alternate for the Olympics in Tokyo.
Monday of this week, Braxton attended the South Varsity Football game. He shared some of his recent experiences and thanked the community for the support demonstrated through his endeavors.
Wednesday, the City of Parkersburg renamed / dedicated a street in his name. Beverly Street, which runs along the student parking lot at South, was renamed Braxton Amos Drive.
Today, Braxton took time to address the student body at Parkersburg South. He spoke briefly about his recent accomplishments. He traveled to three continents and seven countries in a matter of weeks.
Mainly, Amos choose to talk to the students about the importance of taking action in their own lives; such as, having goals and how to deal with adversity when it presents itself. He touched on proper preparation, “always be ready when you’re called upon.” He said, “you never know when your opportunity will come.” He thanked the community for their support and told the students, “don’t stress over things you cannot control.”
